MONTPELIER POLICE RECEIVE INTERNATIONAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN VICTIM SERVICES

The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) announced the winners of the 2011 Excellence in Victim Service Awards. This award recognizes law enforcement agencies that have developed and implemented innovative strategies for providing comprehensive services to victims of crime. Winners were recognized at the IACPs 118th Annual Conference in Chicago, IL on October 24th.

Our Montpelier Idaho Police Department was recognized for it’s innovative and radical transformation to better serve victims. With grant funding and a dedicated staff, MPD started a Victims Assistance Unit in 2009. At that time, basically no services were provided to victims. Victim Services Coordinator Anita Panko successfully implemented an effective program in a small Idaho agency through non-traditional ways of community enhancement which have resulted in programs that reach out to victims in the rural and remote southeastern Idaho area as well as cooperative efforts with Lincoln County Wyoming and Rich County Utah. The program continues to be successful with support from grant funding, law enforcement, non-profits, direct service providers, businesses and individuals. Chief Roper is committed to the continued operation of the MPD Victim Services Unit.

Anita, Detective Wells and former Chief Greg Butler accepted the award in Chicago, supported by Chief Roper. Funding for the travel was enhanced by private donations and a donation from the Pocatello Police Department and Pocatello Kiwanis Club.

Other recipients included the Burlington Vermont Police Department, the Anaheim California PD, the Delaware State Police, Charlotte North Carolina PD and the Albuquerque Police Department.
