Nixle is a new community information service provider built exclusively to provide secure and reliable communications. Its authenticated service connects municipal agencies and community organizations to residents in real time, delivering information to geographically targeted consumers over their cell phones (via text messages), through e-mails and through Web access.
For now, Montpelier residents will be able to receive police-related information and municipal government information via Nixle. Channels providing other kinds of information are expected to be introduced in the future.
Chief Greg Butler stated that over 3,000 law enforcement agencies across the country are using Nixle to get important information out to their residents. Chief Butler went on to say that with this service we can keep Montpelier residents advised of missing children or adults, serious weather conditions, school closures, road closures, crimes in progress, special events and many other things. We can also deliver this information to citizens in the most precise, geographically-targeted way using their secure, closed-network terminals.
